Most people don’t have a problem with drinking, but they do like to drink at certain times, in certain places, with certain people. Imagine someone between 18 and 30 years old who has a problem with a alcohol, and they now have to make a decision to not drink.

Life without alcohol seems impossible. In spite of the difficulty staying clean and straight, there are people who never drink alcohol and do just fine. It’s probably a good idea for all drinkers to understand why they drink. Not drinking alcohol at all is a legitimate, healthy option – however, someone who has a problem with alcohol and faces the possibility of life without alcohol feels like they’re ostracized, a freak, a weakling who can’t hold their drink. No one wants be considered odd. Many people who are social drinkers and can take it or leave it aren’t helpful to those who have a problem. They say thinks like “oh you just let it get out of hand, just drink slower, stretch it out, you’ll learn how to handle it”. This is not helpful.

It’s a shame that in school, subjects like alcoholism and alcohol abuse aren’t taught, like in biology or health. I’m sure some schools address it, but I hear over and over from people that they had no idea. Old ideas about alcohol are literally killing people. The good news is, young people around the world are thinking independently and choosing life without alcohol. Yes, there’s still a problem with binge drinking and early onset alcoholism, but more and more young people are choosing sobriety as a way of life.
