We believe that recovery has to address the whole person. There’s a psychological component to treatment –  mental health is crucial to long term recovery. Emotional issues are dealt with in order to avoid dangerous emotional ups and downs. A big part of recovery is learning to face emotions, talk with someone about what’s going on to create a painful emotional state, then take appropriate actions to find a mental/emotional regeneration.

We’ve discussed spirituality in recovery from addiction. Understanding our spiritual nature is important to lasting change. The mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of recovery are usually covered in treatment, to one degree or another, but the physical aspect of recovery often receives less attention. Much has been learned about nutrition and how it affects our mental and emotional states. Nutrition in addiction recovery is finding it’s proper place among treatment therapies. The chart below from RecoveryGuidlines shows how amino acids can be a part of well managed recovery program:

AMINO ACID NUTRITION THERAPY

Another important area of the use of nutrition in recovery and relapse prevention is the addition of appropriate amino acids that serve as the building blocks for powerful chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters.  These neurotransmitters, including epinephrine and norepinephrine, GABA, serotonin and dopamine, are closely tied to addiction behavior.  With the use of various amino acids, brain chemistry can be changed to help normalize and restore deficiencies in the neurotransmitters that spur cravings that can lead to addiction and relapse.
